At last we left Kigali for good, and we drove west to the south tip of lake Kivu.
Mostly premium highway, and it became a bit boring. The landscape is amazing, hundreds of green hills all around…. it would be a shame not to explore it….
As always, worst idea ever 😀
The road changed into a trail, which changed into nothing…. the landscape was stunning, we crossed a few villages who never saw a foreigner, maybe not even a vehicle, and this would explain why bridges were getting smaller and smaller until it became a couple of logs over a ditch….. nope I’m not crossing that. So far I was focus on the road, and I didn’t realize I lost Eiji and Chizu ! Damn !
I backtracked a bit to find the best way out, and I started to climb slowly to wait for them. From there, the radio should have a good range, but I could not reach them.
I had to wait there for 10min before I could spot their landcruiser in my mirror, all good. I kept going, not easy road, but I finally made it back on the motorway.
No one behind me…. I waited a bit, a few hours, and then the sun went down…… I went to the nearest hotel on the coast with internet to find where they are with their gps tracker.
We managed to get in touch via emails, and they got lost somewhere in the mountains, they had to backtrack a very long way to find the main road….
I felt bad about that one…..
Next day, I drove just a bit further to a big hotel by the lake. Fantastic view ! And this is where I met again with Uwe, and new travelers passing by, Laura and Julianne. Very nice time with them at this place, and next day, Eiji and Chizu finally arrived !
Well, they looked really upset about the whole journey in the mountains, and said they don’t like this country and they want to leave it as soon as possible….. That’s a bit too early for me, I don’t feel like I’ve see this country at all yet, and I decided to stay…..
Next morning they left without saying goodbye….

Meanwhile, more travelers came, including Laura and Rodrigue, which I met in the mushroom farm back in Malawi. Overlanders meeting are always great, simply because we have so much in common.

Back in Kigali, my friend Yann told me he was going to participate in the Huye rally as copilot, and since I’m staying a bit more in Rwanda, I proposed everyone to go there and attend the event, it could be fun !
Uwe will join me later for the race, and Julianne is looking for a ride to Huye, well, perfect, time to hit the road again !
